David Smith has over 30 years of experience both in private practice and in the public sector.  As the principal of his own architectural firm (1980 - 1992), he was responsible for a variety of historic preservation projects in the New York Capital District and Northeast region.  He also served as the Chairman of the City of Schenectady, NY Historic District Commission from 1981 to 1990, overseeing two large histric districts within the City.  His experience includes projects on the National Historic Register, historic streetscapes and numerous examples of adaptive reuse.


As Campus Architect at SUNY New Paltz (1993 - 2009), Mr. Smith has overseen the development and management of major campus buildings and rehabilitation projects.  He was architect of record for a number of campus projects, including the Health Center and the Hopfer Alumni House, both historic adaptive reuse projects, and the rehabilitation of Vandenberg Hall, a 1930's classroom building.

Prior to 1980, Mr. Smith was responsible for a variety of project design activities with EcoDesign/CETec, an international A&E firm in Boston.  He was Project Team Leader involved with large scale national and international development projects including the JFK Presidential Library and the Rehabilitation of the historic Castle at Brandeis University.   He also managed the preservation of the 1895 Looff Carousel in Pawtucket, RI, (pictured above).

Mr. Smith's expertise is not limited to historic preservation projects.  His passive solar home designs have won awards and have been published by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)
